In a perfect marriage of player and part, Reese Witherspoon is Elle Woods, the most cosmo Cosmo girl at the California university where she's literally and figuratively majoring in fashion. When her elite opportunist boyfriend dumps her for Harvard law school and one of his classmates, she vows to gain admission to the program so she can get him back. But somewhere along the way, the material girl begins a romance with her own intellect. Though it's inexplicably riddled with gratuitous gay stereotypes and the first half hour is flatter than Pan-Cake, this makeover fantasy is as nuanced as many are reductive. Witherspoon does sport kicky specs after she matriculates, but her transformation doesn't just invert all those stories about the effect of black plastic glasses on actresses who look like Sandra Bullock—it transcends them. Robert Luketic directed a screenplay by Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith, based on a novel by Amanda Brown. 96 min.
