Founded in 2008 by Himanshu Suri, formerly of hilarious agitprop rap group Das Racist, Greedhead is a combination artist-management company and record label whose roster includes some of the most important musicians on hip-hop’s fringes. Headlining this bill of three Greedhead artists is Le1f, whose 2012 mixtape Dark York put him at the center of a whirlwind of trend pieces on New York City’s fresh crop of gay rappers. Subsequent records—an EP with producer Boody that leans heavily on ambient techno, plus a new mixtape, Tree House, that sounds like an R&B album beamed in from the Antares system—prove not only that “gay rapper” is too confining a category to stick him in but also that “rapper” might not suffice either. Earlier this year San Jose’s Antwon released In Dark Denim, his fifth mixtape and the first to bring a sizeable audience to his blend of brash, southern-style rapping and punkishly lo-fi production. Opening is Lakutis, Greedhead’s Cheshire Cat and probably the most out-there dude in a stable full of out-there dudes. —Miles Raymer Le1f headlines; Antwon and Lakutis open.
