Our Review

The menu at Le Petit Paris is old-school bistro fare, and when I say old school, I mean it--I can't remember the last time I saw duck a l'orange on a menu. On our visit service seemed almost desperately eager to please: we were encouraged to try the night's special, a filet brochette, and enticed with the hint of a dessert special to come ("I don't want to spoil the surprise," our waiter teased). We opted to start with escargots tucked under a blanket of puff pastry and a simple salad of mixed greens, then moved on to rack of lamb and coq au vin. The lamb, crusted with rosemary and mustard seeds and served in a port wine sauce, was toothsome and gamy in a good way, and the coq au vin--half a meaty bird--glistened with an expertly reduced wine stock. Offered three reds and three whites by the glass, we were happy with both the pinot gris and the Cotes de Nuits burgundy, though we were never shown an actual wine list. And as for that surprise dessert? Well, strawberries with lemon curd isn't exactly Gale Gand decadent, but it was fresh and tasty. As we left we saw owner Alain Sitbon at the curb, hailing a taxi for the table that had departed just before us.
