Maybe the most impressive video I've seen from Le Butcherettes' set at this summer's Lollapalooza is of the short drums-and-vocals number "Dress Off." Wearing her trademark bloody apron—it's meant to dispel the stereotype of housewives as timid and act as a metaphor for violence against women—and with her hair in a sweaty frazzle from riling up the listless crowd, front woman Teri Gender Bender (born Teresa Suarez) completely owns the stage, doing a strange tribal dance and maniacally flailing around as she repeats the song's two simple lines of lyrics in her booming, sassy voice. It's one of the best cuts from the trio's debut full-length, Sin Sin Sin (released in May by Omar Rodriguez-Lopez of the Mars Volta), and a prime example of how she can carry a song pretty much alone, with out-and-out stage presence and charisma. The disjointed garage rock on the rest of the album is more hit than miss, including the fuzzed-out stomper "New York" and the playfully crunchy "Henry Don't Got Love"—which is probably already playing on an Urban Outfitters soundtrack somewhere. —Kevin Warwick Gypsyblood and White Mystery opens.
