J.J. Connolly adapted this UK crime thriller from his novel, and you can tell: it's crammed with exposition, and its web of double crosses rivals The Godfather, Part II. But director Matthew Vaughn, who produced Guy Ritchie's Snatch and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, has assembled a colorful cast whose combined energy lifts the story off the ground. Daniel Craig stars as a coolly professional drug lieutenant who plans to make his fortune and get out; his goal begins to seem unlikely after an associate steals a huge ecstasy shipment from a rival gang. I wasn't always sure what was happening, but with Colm Meaney, Michael Gambon, Kenneth Cranham, George Harris, and Jamie Foreman all stomping around issuing dire threats, I didn't really care. R, 100 min.
