Re: “DCA Storefront Theater staff sacked

For anyone who remains concerned about the city's commitment to the Storefront, despite reassurances from the DCASE staffer, here are the email addresses of folks at the city to contact about your support for this wonderful resource for small dance and theater companies: and

Re: “In Aerial Dance Chicago’s Unearthed, it’s too easy being green.

Thanks to all who've commented (especially the most recent--thank you MikD!); it's good to know someone out there is reading. Too bad that posting anonymous comments online leaves the way open to some pretty nasty, ad hominem stuff, like the thought that I was just cranky and needed a vacation.

I do think ADC has handled their reactions to the review (posted on their web site) respectfully and professionally, though I disagree with one of them. I certainly never meant to suggest that ADC's environmental commitment was superficial; I'm not sure how anyone would get that from the review. The whole paragraph was about the sincerity of ADC's commitment. My purpose was to commend ADC on its personal efforts, which I thought were admirable, and let readers know about them.

Reasonable people might disagree on the other points: the relative value of community commentary vs. expert scientific opinion, the role played by anger in polemical art, whether the show will have an impact and in what way, etc. There were at least 5 people who enjoyed and were moved by Unearthed. But please respect me as a dance critic of 25 years: I do understand the abstract and visceral nature of a dance experience. I also think that the best dance works have a strong beginning, middle, and end. Not obvious, strong.

I'm sorry that the review doesn't include a link to ADC's green resources page, so here it is:

Re: “Remembering Cliff Doerksen

This is terrible news! What a loss to Chicago's journalism community; like Jim Jones said, you never knew where Cliff was going to take you, but you were assured of a great ride. I worked with him for years and wish I'd known him better -- he always had a wry, oddly cheering yet grumpy word to say around the Reader coffee pot...

To his family: I am so sorry for your loss. I've been there ... So sorry, so sorry.
