Documentary footage of the 1979 May Day parade in the city of Alma-Ata (now Almaty) with a voice-over praising the Kazakh economy provides an ironic opener to this 1996 tale of adolescent alienation in the twilight of the Soviet era. Three friends listen to the Beatles, get drunk and high, and steal a guitar; one's father turns in him to the police, who beat him and dump him by a roadside. Peering through windows at the characters, director Amir Karakulov's long takes and occasional views through windows blend anthropological detachment and voyeurism. The colors of this muddy print are drowned in reddish brown. Dubbed from Kazakh into Russian, with subtitles. 65 min.
