Re: “The Amazon HQ2 deal could sell Chicagoans down the river

Ben Joravsky, how disappointing. Is radio addling your brain? What a half-asssed assessment your article presents - I don't even know where to start. Amazon in Chicago isn't the second coming, I agree, but the Olympics? That's some lazy reasoning. The track record of the Olympics is mass corruption and bankruptcy every 4 years- a terrible mix with Chicago politics. That's not Amazons track record in Seattle- they have created jobs and wealth in that city. Right now it seems the fastest growing employer of young people in Chicago is Uber or Lyft, so while amazon might not bring exactly 50,000 jobs, and many of those jobs will pay far less than 6 figures, to somehow make the case that we're better off without all that cash and job growth is ridiculous. Because as you well know, we already pay a corruption tax, the TIF money is already out of our pockets, our taxes are already increasing to cover the gaps left by Rahm's slush fund. I'd rather TIF $ go to Amazon over Rahms developer friends, Navy Pier or a basketball stadium for DePaul- I guarantee Chicago will get more jobs out of Amazon that any of our current TIF expenditures. And lets not forget, in all of our blind anti-corporate rage, universities and hospitals also pay no taxes, yet offer a huge boost to our economy because they supply well paying secure employment for 10's of thousands of Chicagoans. Jobs are worth something.
