Lang Lang | Lyric Opera House | Classical | Chicago Reader
This is a past event.
When: Sat., May 9, 7:30 p.m. 2015
Price: $34-$179
Chinese piano prodigy Lang Lang was only 17 in the summer of 1999, when he was in town for an audition and got called on to substitute for Andre Watts in a guest appearance with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at the Ravinia Festival. His virtuosity that night propelled him to stardom in the classical music world and ultimately to gigs like the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Over the years he’s continued to win acclaim for his technical skill, though critics have been less enthusiastic than audiences about his emotional—some would say histrionic—performance style. This opera-house recital of work by Bach, Tchaikovsky, and Chopin includes a video screen that’ll allow everyone a close view of the keyboard and the drama, which he’s reportedly tamped down now. —Deanna Isaacs
