It's almost always bad luck to say this about a label, but I've never heard a record on Southern Lord I didn't like. Though I haven't heard them all yet, I've heard enough to know that my odds of getting serious, satisfying, innovative metal are way better than even. The label was founded by Stephen O'Malley and Greg Anderson, both of Sunn O))) and Thorr's Hammer, who've further confirmed their good taste by adding Chicago's own Lair of the Minotaur to their roster. Last year they put out the trio's debut, the supple, vicious Carnage ("Carnage Fucking Carnage" does "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" one better--there's a great riff inside that helicopter grind, and it has to fight to get out), and early next year its second full-length, The Ultimate Destroyer, is due. In the meantime Southern Lord has released the limited-edition three-inch CD Cannibal Massacre, which includes a video for "The Wolf," off the first LP. Though Lair of the Minotaur's lineup includes a guitarist and bassist from batshit pranksters 7000 Dying Rats and the drummer from Pelican, the band's unholy crunch (and spectacularly gory take on Greek mythology) is unapologetically old-school--the Slayer, Celtic Frost, and Venom influences come through so clearly it's as though these guys have never let any other kind of music sully their ears.
