Over the years Chicago’s Jaime Fennelly has consistently expanded and reshaped the sound of his harmonium-and-electronics solo project Mind Over Mirrors, and he takes another leap with the intoxicating new album The Voice Calling (Immune). The project’s most noticeable addition is Haley Fohr (Circuit des Yeux), whose otherworldly vibrato, shimmering drones, and quasi-operatic swooshes can bring the spacey pulsations of Fennelly down to earth—or shoot his churning arpeggios deep into the heavens. Harmonium remains Fennelly’s primary instrument, but he feeds the old-school Indian pump organ through a constellation of effects pedals and tape delays to forge dreamy, slow-moving, finely grained melody lines that split the difference between prog-rock pomp and new age flotation-tank chill. Those melodies are supported by looping, glowing synthesizer patterns that give the music its warm, throbbing center. The album concludes with an epic, morphing title track that toggles between vibes dictated by Fohr, who sings lyrics instead of wordless sounds, invoking Nico’s icy vibe, and later adds searing guitar feedback. She’ll join Fennelly for tonight’s show. —Peter Margasak
