Former Stereolab singer Laetitia Sadier has made three albums with her side project Monade since 2003, but last year's The Trip (Drag City) is the first she's released under her own name. The music, though even less aggressive than her old band's, retains many elements of its sound—motorik rhythms, chanson melodies, the retro tone colors of analog synths—but Sadier's lyrics depart dramatically from the Marxism Lite of Stereolab's, becoming much more personal. The title track is a meditation on the suicide of her sister ("She went on a million-year trip / And left everything behind / Her skin, her hair"), and other songs deal in less tragic sorts of leave-taking; throughout the record she brings a measured grace to difficult situations with her gentle, elegant delivery. Even in the covers she chooses—among them Wendy & Bonnie's "By the Sea"—the lyrics sting while the music soothes. —Peter Margasak Sam Prekop, Redgrave, and Vapor Eyes open.
