If La Danse and Crazy Horse can be described as Frederick Wiseman's love letters to French culture, this 2008 documentary might be described as a French love letter to Wiseman. Director Benjamin Marquet successfully emulates the American filmmaker in his depiction of teenage boys training to become professional jockeys (though there are some deviations from Wiseman's pseudo-objective tone, such as the occasional insertion of old film clips). This isn't an expository work, but a quirky, impressionistic portrait: Marquet seems just as fascinated by the boys’ menial tasks as by their athletic training. Largely indifferent to storytelling, this isn't for everyone, but those who appreciate cinema verite should admire Marquet's compositional sense and the subtle ironies of the editing. In French with subtitles.
Director: Benjamin Marquet
