Ladies in Lavender

Veteran British actor Charles Dance (Gosford Park) makes his debut as writer-director with this three-hanky drama about elderly sisters (Judi Dench, Maggie Smith) living quietly on the English Channel before World War II. One day a young Polish violinist (Daniel Brühl of Good Bye, Lenin!) washes ashore half-drowned, and as the sisters nurse him back to health, Dench develops an unbearably painful crush. This movie will hardly set the world on fire, but it's a worthy vehicle for the two old troupers; Smith has the stiffest upper lip in the business, and Dench is heartrending as the naive, lovelorn sister. With Natascha McElhone, Miriam Margolyes, and David Warner. PG-13, 104 min.
