Louis Malle's troubling and finely perceived (if sluggishly paced) 1974 study of a bumbling French peasant boy's drift into fascism. Set in the last years of World War II, the film makes no blanket condemnations. Instead, it establishes the uneasy notion that, in the definition of the banality of evil, a major component is ordinary human carelessness. In French with subtitles.
