Isabelle Huppert's restrained acting is perfect for her role as the uninvolved wife in a disintegrating marriage, and director Christian Vincent's understatement matches hers: as she casually walks away from her husband she tells him she's fallen in love with another man. Daniel Auteuil is also excellent as the husband who seethes with anger and occasionally explodes. The script wavers unconvincingly—the marriage is over, they still love each other, the wife's affair is over—and there isn't much to recommend in this 1994 film besides the performances. In French with subtitles. 88 min.
