In 1965 French author and filmmaker Marguerite Duras was hired to write an episode for Love Story, an insipid British TV series specializing in romantic dramas. This odd little one-act was the result. Duras sets an estranged married couple in the provincial French hotel where they first fell in love, arming them with weapons-grade dialogue that gets a capable new translation here by Alice Austen. Considering the script's origin, director Noemi Schlosser probably isn't entirely to blame for the queasy combination of pretension and schlock that characterizes this Salomee Speelt production. Then again, avant-garde gags like a saxophone player who occasionally interrupts scenes and a chalk-drawn set, added to and erased by the cast, relate little to Duras's themes. —Keith Griffith
