In this 2007 Argentinean drama by Santiago Otheguy, the hushed waters and enveloping jungle of the Parana Delta conceal undercurrents of lust, shame, and anger. A solitary young man (Jorge Roman) spends his days harvesting reeds for cash and his nights quietly cruising the river for men; on the tiny island where he lives, rumors about his sexuality mark him for ridicule by the cruel skipper of a local ferry (Daniel Valenzuela). The narrative is resolutely low-key, but all the while Otheguy is winding up for a brutal sucker punch. Shot by Paula Grancio, the entrancing wide-screen images are impressively counterintuitive: soft focus mutes the fastidious detail of high-definition video, and the black and white solemnizes a landscape we're used to seeing in riotous color. 79 min.
