Emo emerged 30 years ago after hardcore, fueled by testosterone and intolerance, crashed head-on into a brick wall, and the genre has since spawned a tangle of waves and iterations. But while more slippery with every evolution, emo has one constant: you know it when you hear it. The chest-pounding thump of Title Fight placed the Pennsylvania four-piece on the scene’s outer edge, well beyond the general idea of what devotees have come to expect from emo in the 2010s (like wistful guitar curlicues reminiscent of multicolored leaves twirling in an autumn midwestern wind). And that was before Title Fight dropped its third album, February’s Hyperview (Anti), which sinks deeper into the shoegaze nirvana that the group started flirting with on 2012’s Floral Green. Hyperview is an isolation tank of emo-inflected shoegaze. It’s immersive, and even when the band veers towards tidal-wave aggression on tracks like “Rose of Sharon” and “Chlorine,” it remains therapeutic. —Leor Galil
