Set at a Saint Tropez nightclub, Jerry Herman and Harvey Fierstein's La Cage aux Folles has wit, charm, and a sweet reversal by means of which the club's gay owner, Georges, and his drag-queen "wife" Albin are revealed as true guardians of family values. What the 1983 musical doesn't have is a clear strategy for in-the-round presentation. Director Joe Leonardo hasn't found one, anyway. Denied proscenium-style scenic changes, he and set designer Thomas M. Ryan get sloppy, failing to establish the story's geography. One important consequence: the big final scene lacks logistical coherence and narrative sense. The production's saving graces are its Georges and Albin, David Hess and Gene Weygandt. Weygandt, in particular, is extraordinary. Whether pouting, staring daggers, or accepting the adulation of, well, ultimately everybody, his Albin comes across as a man serene in the knowledge of what love is and pleased to have his share. —Tony Adler
