L-vis Live! | Victory Gardens Theater | Theater & Performance | Chicago Reader
This is a past event.
When: Thursdays-Saturdays. Continues through April 14 2012
Price: $10-$20
In this one-man show based on his 2011 book, L-Vis Lives: Racemusic Poems, Kevin Coval tells the story of a white suburban teenager who rises to rap superstardom as L-Vis only to realize he's just a modern-day blackface minstrel. Coval goes off on a thrilling jag early in the hour-long piece adapted by director Jess McLeod, detailing the myriad verbal and behavioral codes white Americans use to acknowledge racial inequality while disavowing responsibility for it. The language is clipped, the images multivalent, the performance fevered. But overall, the narrative is so fractured, Coval's characterization of L-Vis so broad, and his rush of dense metaphors so unvaried that the piece ends up coming across as nearly opaque. —Justin Hayford
