Re: “People who care most about movies are the ones who stay home

What's appealing about film to me is the ability for a group audience to experience a narrative in explicitly real time, together. This lends itself to powerful social moments, like when you grab a friend's arm at a horror flick, and he grabs you back just as hard, because there was a fucking dude with a knife who came out of the closet.

The theater is absolutely the best place to experience these kinds of shocks, because there is an added awareness that strangers around you are experiencing the exact same emotions you are, and it's thrilling to be connected with so many random people.

For these reasons, I generally only see blockbusters or shitty horror movies in theaters, and save the passionate tear-jerkers for Netflix, when the situation feels right. (Or sometimes I want to show my friends I'm ahead of the curve, and will drag them to something that was hot at Sundance, because I know it's going to be sick, and they would have never seen it otherwise. Winter's Bone getting the Oscar nods after bringing four friends in blind the summer before = bragging rights/BOOYAH.)
