Knock Off

Jean-Claude Van Damme and Rob Schneider are sales reps for a brand of blue jeans that become linked with a terrorist scheme during the British handover of Hong Kong. Though the jokey lines seem out of place, the somber tone of this 1998 action movie makes the political subtext—nearly obscured by the expected double crosses, extravagant destruction, and incongruous-buddies shtick—more sincere and less grandiose than usual. Written by Steven E. de Souza and directed by Tsui Hark; with Lela Rochon and Paul Sorvino.
