Re: “Star Wars: The Force Awakens -- An IMAX 3D Experience

J.R. Jones is, I think, revealing a truth uncomfortable to most of his readers. At some point, American cinema became blockbuster and special effects obsessed and needed "good and evil" as clearly expressed as "light side" and "dark side". Likely the most worrying thing about the newest installment is it is to an extent a remake. (Those who suffered the newest "Total Recall" or "Robocop" probably would rather we not continue the remake trend.) This is where it becomes clear that the audience wants to experience the familiar.

I truly believe this is above average relative to the series. It expresses more in its character interactions than previous installments, and made the best of rehash as meditations-on-a-theme. That doesn't cure it of its flaws, many shared by its predecessors.

Funny that the users of this site are rating Jones rather than the movie though. It would look like they all agree with him.

Re: “I choo choo choose you: Reader staffers pick their all-time favorite episodes of The Simpsons

I think the biggest omission here is "Last Exit to Springfield". For a long time, "Cape Feare" was my favorite episode (still way, way up there). Then I watched "Last Exit to Springfield" again for the first time in years. That episode is full of the best sorts of jokes they ever did, great single shot gags, great parody and pastiche (Burns as The Grinch being a particular example).
