This 2002 Tunisian feature by writer-director Jilani Saadi revisits that old chestnut, the simpleton who exposes the other characters' corruption. Khorma (Med Graya), an assistant to the aging town crier, seems content to lope around town, sing, dance, and enjoy the sensual pleasures of drinking and pissing. When the old man begins to falter, the village elders promote Khorma, thinking they can easily control him, but to their distress he becomes a champion of the poor. Saadi brings fresh energy to this familiar story but stresses every scene equally, which hampers the dramatic tension. In Arabic with subtitles. 78 min.
