Re: “Bill Granger, RIP

Bill Granger was a Chicago tough guy with a heart of gold. I first met him in 1981 at the Chicago Press Club where he held court during breaks from his work at the newspaper. Bill was one of Chicago's best writers, but he never acted the part or let you know he was famous. He loved his family and Chicago. Once I asked him about the secret to writing a great novel. His answer: "Declarative sentence after declarative sentence." He lived what he taught. He came up the hard way and worked his way to stunning success. He was a dear friend and mentor to a wide circle of younger writers. He was bigger than life. He was a reporter’s reporter and a novelist who achieved international acclaim. He was Chicago personified.
