A conscientious young man (Tod Fennell) defies harsh frontier weather and a villainous rancher to save the life of a lovable husky in this 1996 Canadian feature that harks back to the solid family entertainment of Old Yeller and The Yearling. Fennell achieves an easy rapport with Henry Czerny (The Boys of Saint Vincent), who plays his stepfather in an Oedipal subplot that parallels the central relationship between boy and dog, and director Nicholas Kendall manages to inject plenty of suspense into the climax, a dogsled race whose outcome is never really in doubt.
