Katrina: Mother-in-Law of 'Em All

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Oct. 4 2015
Price: $20, $15 students and seniors
Last month media outlets marked the tenth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina with heaps of video package-remembrances and editorials. It was a somber reminder of what happens when bureaucratic indifference meets preventable tragedy, and worse, of indictments that never came. Sure, there's anger and bewilderment underneath playwright and New Orleans resident Rob Florence's montage retelling of the flood and its aftermath, but it's literally shushed away—that's not what we're here for. Instead, Georgette Verdin's production for Interrobang Theatre uniquely highlights the unsung neighborly gestures that saved countless lives, and ultimately the culture of New Orleans itself. The true stories Florence curates are informative and affecting; his homecoming framing device mutes it a bit, and the cast force joy into speeches that top out at cautious optimism. —Dan Jakes
