Kati With an I

Kati Genthner is an 18-year-old high school senior in Jacksonville, Alabama, who's engaged to a 21-year-old skateboarder and McDonald’s employee; her main interests are make-up, pool parties, and shopping at the mall. This cinema verité documentary (2010) lets the young woman's ignorance speak for itself, the fly-on-the-wall approach perversely suggesting an ethnographic study. Director Robert Greene (Kati's half brother) captures some pungent moments of teenage self-delusion but never establishes a consistent tone: after showing Kati at her at her most damnably immature, he'll back off by showing how sweet she can be. The final moments, though, are unexpectedly grim and leave a strong aftertaste.
