Re: “County board prez: Why are we closing schools and packing the jail?

"I listened to WBEZ's "Afternoon Shift" coverage of this issue today / 22nd featuring Mary Mitchell and others. I couldn't get this comment thru on the phone, so the show's manager recommended I send it to their online commentary. In response/reaction to the caller about ten minutes to three whose son's neighborhood high school will close, I wanted to specifically address her comment about "THE MONEY SUCK" -- ie, the myth of SCHOOL CHOICE. I hope Rick can share this resource with listeners. A FABULOUS exceedingly thorough and well-researched book has JUST been published by New Press, detailing the history of how CHOICE has been used to eviscerate public funding of K-12 education in MILWAUKEE PUBLIC SCHOOLS: "Lessons from the Heartland - a turbulent half-century of public education in an iconic American City" is written by journalist and public school parent Barbara Miner whose impeccable data and earnest style will fuel Chicago public school supporters, I have no doubt. I highly recommend LESSONS FROM THE HEARTLAND. Disclosure: my sister in law was president of the MPS board during the most hopeful decade of Milwaukee's struggle to make public education work for ALL STUDENTS, and I thank Mary Bills for making sure that this story gets published. I'm a public school parent; our two adult children did their K-12 in Evanston / Skokie Public Schools. THANKS FOR A GREAT PROGRAM, RICK & GUESTS."
