Re: “Jay Travis, the organizer

Politicians should not be allowed to treat poor people as if they have no constitutional rights. In my opinion, drug testing CHA residents would be unconstitutional search and seizure. It also assumes, incorrectly, that people recieving these subsidies are more likely to to use illegal drugs.

My family lived in CHA for the first 13 years of my life and, like a lot of parents who lived there, my mother worked everyday. She, like most mothers in CHA, did not use illegal drugs and to drug test her would have been preposterous and demeaning. We are talking about people here. I was also a Chicago Police officer and can tell you from experience that the stigma attached to all CHA residents is unwarranted. Unfortunately, people make these assumptions because they are either uninformed or somehow feel superior. I appreciate the fact that we have the chance to elect soneone who actually listens to the people she's dedicated her life to supporting. Someone, finally, who will work for the needs of her constituents. You've got my support Jay!
