Raquel Welch stars as roller derby badass K.C. Carr, who gets pushed out of Kansas City after losing a match with a rival and lands on another team in Portland, Oregon. The renewed popularity of women's roller derby has given this clumsy 1972 drama a new lease on life, and it has marginal interest as a camp item and women's lib relic. The downbeat second half keeps threatening to turn into Requiem for a Heavyweight, with Norman Alden as a desperate clown on the men's team, but in most respects this seems like a dry run for Showgirls: silky team owner Kevin McCarthy wants to make Raquel a star and get her in the sack, to the displeasure of scowling queen bee Helena Kallianiotes. Jerrold Freedman directed. PG, 99 min.
