Giddy with its own cuteness, this kinetic 2004 Japanese comedy stars pop singer Kyoko Fukada as a seamstress who embraces the so-called “Lolita” subculture, dolling herself up in French rococo fashions, and model Anna Tsuchiya as her new buddy, a butch chick who rides with a female “biker” club (sorry, girls, those are scooters). This is entertaining for a while, a whirlwind of color and action that taps into the faddish energy of Japanese pop culture. But eventually the story wears thin, and the charm begins to feel more like high blood sugar. Tetsuya Nakashima directed. In Japanese with subtitles. 102 min.
