This computer-animated fantasy from France (2003) lifts its setting (a cosmically huge tree that stretches between two planets) from Brian Aldiss's classic sci-fi novel Hothouse and should have taken its plot from there too. Kaena, a feisty young gal whose improbable bod makes Lara Croft look like Olive Oyl, abandons her tree-dwelling tribe to discover what lies beyond. She meets a bunch of alien beasties, some evil and others brimming with tedious new age platitudes. I found this visually stunning at first, then fell into a coma from too much digital eye candy. Chris Delaporte and Pascal Pinon directed; with the voices of Kirsten Dunst, Anjelica Houston, and, in his final role, Richard Harris. PG-13, 85 min.
