Justin Timberlake & Jay Z

When: Mon., July 22, 8 p.m. 2013
Price: $54.50-$250
Justin Timberlake’s solo career began while he was still in ’N Sync: when the single “Gone” (from what turned out to be group’s final album, 2001’s Celebrity) hit the airwaves, listeners far outside the Disney tweenybopper demographic suddenly realized that beneath those frosted tips lurked a formidable R&B artist. In the decade-plus since, he’s built a solid reputation as a world-class pop performer who’s game to take real risks with his image and sound, and in the process he’s found fans in every corner of the cultural landscape. After a long silence he released The 20/20 Experience (RCA) in March, and though it’s not as daring as some had hoped, it still coasts by on plenty of charm and the seemingly unkillable single “Suit and Tie.”

As you may have heard, Timberlake’s partner on that track, Jay-Z, recently dropped a new album himself. Magna Carta . . . Holy Grail (Roc Nation) is either too freaky or too bland, depending on whose tweets you read, but it’s definitely an idiosyncratic standout in what’s become one of the most monumental discographies in postmillennial pop. Personally I find MCHG’s precisely crafted opulence and Jay’s newfound obsession with modern art intriguing enough to keep it in heavy rotation. —Miles Raymer
