As far as America-through-the-eyes-of-the-French documents go, JUSTICE’s A Cross the Universe DVD, which captures much of the duo’s second U.S. tour, isn’t exactly de Tocqueville. Baudrillard enthusiasts, however, might appreciate the tone of gee-whiz disgust in its fascination with oh-so-wacky shit like homeless people, gun ranges, and downtown Detroit. Despite one young fan’s assertion that “Justice is the new rock ’n’ roll,” much of what we see in the film—autographing of tits, hot-tub canoodling, gun-toting managers, someone tenderly playing piano to an empty stadium—is actually old rock ’n’ roll. One almost expects Vince Neil to wander into frame and start spraying champagne on groupies. This indulgent nonsense can’t obscure what really matters about the movie, though: Justice’s music and the blitzkrieg thump of their live shows. They’re DJing tonight, and in that capacity they aren’t quite as senses-razing: they have ecumenical anything-you-can-dance-to tastes heavily influenced by the genteel disco arts, both French and Italo. If you’re looking to ring in ’09 grinding on strangers, this is the best bet in town. —Jessica Hopper
