Jupiter Ascending

I thought the meek were supposed to inherit the earth, but in this grandiose space opera, it's Mila Kunis. A lowly Chicago janitor from a family of rambunctious Russian immigrants, she discovers that in truth she belongs to an aristocratic line of aliens who inhabit the title planet (and all have British accents), and that she's the rightful queen of earth. Like many fantasy features by the Wachowskis (Cloud Atlas, the Matrix trilogy), this is a wonder to behold, full of minutely realized gadgetry, but a chore to follow, full of barely realized characters. The story sticks to the basic outlines of the original Star Wars, with stand-ins for Princess Leia (Kunis), Han Solo (Sean Bean), Luke Skywalker (Channing Tatum as a genetic wolf boy with pointy ears), and Darth Vader (Eddie Redmayne, trying out various moues and strutting around in a black leather cape). The Wachowskis hail from Chicago but have rarely shown it in their movies; I suppose the worlds they inhabit mentally make it seem even more gray.
