This group of young choreographers decided to "jump giant"--to bypass the usual route for independent choreographers of putting on a few individual concerts a year at small venues. Instead they've pooled their money and rented the Athenaeum Theatre, an ornate auditorium that seats a few hundred, hoping to attract an audience outside the die-hard dance crowd. The program of nine pieces by seven choreographers is danced by more than 20 dancers, with plenty of talent sprinkled throughout: there should be something for everyone in this show, which offers a promising mix of dances and ideas. Ruth Klotzer based her piece on the lines and shapes of a Kandinsky lithograph; she will have two painters painting the back wall and the dancers. Sabine Fabie and Mark Schulze will perform their duet, Moonbathers, which celebrates their favorite writers. Fabie describes her new duet, Together as To, as "passionate in a very quiet way." The starting point for Schulze's new quartet, Third Step In, Dip, is a passage from a book on how to do the tango. Tracy Von Kaenel's It Figures is a humorous piece about daily frustrations, performed by members of the Dance Theater of Elgin. Melissa Thodos's two pieces feature dancing that's both athletic and technical: Spires is danced on a set of steel beams, and How the Planets Were Placed uses rhythmic-gymnastics balls and a Vivaldi score. Rebecca Rossen and Anthony Gongora--who have very different bodies and ways of moving--have decided to jointly choreograph a solo, then each perform it alone. Friday and Saturday at 8 at the Athenaeum Theatre, 2936 N. Southport; $8-$12 (a portion of the proceeds benefits the Dance for Life Fund, which helps dancers with HIV/AIDS). Call 271-3868 or 508-1747 for tickets and info.-
