It’s been four years since the release of Mythomania (Asthmatic Kitty), the second wonderful album by Nedelle Torrisi’s old art-pop band Cryptacize, which she led with former boyfriend (and former Deerhoof guitarist) Chris Cohen. Last year, under the name Paradise, she released the single “Psychic Returns,” a slice of retro electro-soul-pop that taught me that she could shape her melodies and singing to fit slick neo-90s synth pop as well as Cryptacize’s jagged guitar arrangements. Now she’s self-released a self-titled album in the same mold, and though I prefer the live-band sound of Cryptacize, the new record’s rich, layered vocal harmonies, sung in part by Julia Holter and Ramona Gonzalez (Nite Jewel), are just as great. Working with producer Kenny Gilmore (Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti), who played most of the instruments on the album too, Torrisi has created a sumptuous breakup album that blankets its sadness in a sound that weaves together Spandau Ballet and Sade. —Peter Margasak Julia Holter headlines.
