Judge has never bothered with subtlety. Formed in 1987 by John Porcelly and Mike “Judge” Ferraro, a pair of youth-crew alums from Youth of Today, this legendary New York straightedge-hardcore band was ruthlessly militant and direct in its message. Lyrics such as “A beer, a joint, like a gun at your head” and “Those drugs will kill you if I don’t get you first” toed the line between preaching about a better way and threatening to beat that better way into your face. But part of Judge’s perverse charm was due to that no-bullshit attitude—and the rest came from bulky, metal-tinged guitars and boomy drums that sounded like they were recorded in an abandoned prison. They were a bulldozer of a band, whether you had X’ed-out hands or not. Judge’s heyday was short—they broke up in 1991—but last year they reunited to great fanfare. This is their only midwestern date so far, and their first show in Chicago since a 1989 date at Dreamerz with Gorilla Biscuits and Bold. If Ferraro can summon even a little of the old gravel in his intimidating voice and rep some of the mojo from the band’s 1989 classic Bringin’ It Down, the crowd will doubtless provide the rest of the fuel for the inevitable inferno. —Kevin Warwick
