Already known for presenting performance spectacles in city parks, Redmoon Theater celebrates Labor Day by launching its first full-out festival. The Joyous Outdoor Event features an eclectic mix of mostly local acts on two stages, including live music curated by the Metro and Smart Bar. Each of JOE's five days climaxes with Redmoon's Last of My Species II: The Perilous Songs of Bibi Merhdad (Thu-Sun 9/2-9/5, 8:30-9:30 PM, Mon 9/6, 4:30-5:30 PM)--a sequel to last year's tongue-in-cheek marvel, Last of My Species: The Fearless Songs of Laarna Cortaan, described as a "rock 'n' roll" event combining "machinery, puppets, song, and visual artistry." Offstage you'll find roving jugglers and gymnasts, guerrilla performances, and a kid-friendly fun zone with old-fashioned games. The centerpiece of the festival is the Luminarium, a 35-foot-tall inflatable structure by the UK-based Architects of Air, with a vast, colorful interior visitors can explore. Music highlights include the neo-soul group JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound (Thu 9/2, 7-8 PM), Americana-flavored Ezra Furman and the Harpoons (Fri 9/3, 7-8 PM), and the Scotland Yard Gospel Choir (Sat 9/4, 7-8 PM). There's also a variety show from Studio BE (Sat 9/4, 2-3 PM), contemporary dance by Kate Corby & Dancers (Sat 9/4, 3:30-4 PM, Sun 9/5, 1:30-2 PM), and bouffant-style clowning by Les Enfants Terribles (Sat 9/4, 5:30-6 PM). On Sunday Emmy-winning storyteller Jim May (9/5, 3-4 PM) is followed by art-rock duo My Gold Mask (9/5, 6-7 PM) and the campy Kansas City electro-disco band Ssion (9/5, 7-8 PM). Labor Day proper features a set by Purple Apple (Mon 9/6, 3-4 PM), a local indie pop quartet consisting of three 12- and 13-year-old girls and their 24-year-old babysitter. --Robin Peterson
