Join the Progressive Party

In your City File column of December 15, under the heading "Ralph Nader's Still Wrong," you quote Dave Moberg as saying that "Attacking the Democrats will undermine progressive political forces at a time when there seems to be a chance of rebuilding a popular movement critical of corporate power."

To my mind this is a perfect example of doublethink.

The Democratic Party supports NAFTA, IMF, and WTO. It wants increased military spending, including the preposterous "Star Wars" missile defense system. Since the Republicans on the Supreme Court anointed Bush as our first entirely bogus president, the only audible difference between these two allegedly opposed camps is that the Republicans want a tax cut for the wealthy, while the Democrats want a tax cut for the middle class. Neither proposes to return it to the poor people they stole it from, many of whom have been on street corners begging with plastic cups since their welfare checks disappeared.

Yet Moberg and the Reader want us to believe progressives can oppose NAFTA, WTO, IMF, and arms buildup, and the ripping off of poor people by supporting a party that endorses all these policies of the corporate power structure. Right.

I believe we will have a lot better chance of making it through to the 22nd century if Americans will at long last see fit to break with their Republicratic bipartisan habit during the 21st century. For this reason I am participating in an effort to start a Progressive Party here in Illinois. There are already Progressive Parties in Vermont and Wisconsin. In time we would like to develop a Progressive Party on the federal level as well.

Nader will be a bit too old to run in 2004, and the Green Party is seriously dysfunctional. We want to build a party which will be controlled by our membership by means of direct democracy via the Internet. Those interested can phone us at 312-895-4264.
