Few people outside Michigan can point out the town of Fenton on a map, and even fewer consider it a hub for great indie music—but the town has plenty of cred, thanks to Keith Latinen. In 2007 the Fenton local launched the label Count Your Lucky Stars, which has released great albums from key players in the burgeoning underground emo scene, including Rockford's Joie de Vivre and Chicago's CSTVT. CYLS has also helped spread the gospel of Latinen's solo project-turned-band, the melodic and melancholy Empire! Empire! (I Was a Lonely Estate). Latinen has always had a knack for writing tunes that are beautifully downcast even as they ascend skyward, and he's hit his stride on the band's two new split seven-inches (one with Austria's Rika, the other with Australia's Arrows). When the measured, twinkly guitar intersects with Latinen's nasal wail and existential lyrics, it can sound like the band has reached the emo equivalent of nirvana—feeling sad rarely sounds so blissful. —Leor Galil Joie de Vivre headlines; Empire!
