Re: “The farmer's dilemma

Even sending the animal to a small local slaughterhouse (which they normally do) is a pretty harrowing ordeal for the animal's last day or so.

Captive bolts are used to stun the animal prior to slaughter. They don't always work. a small-caliber round is just as effective and takes a step out of the process.

For a smaller animal like a pig, .22 rounds are perfect. They're cheap, easy to use, provide very little recoil and report, (usually) produce a quick death, and have a very small chance on creating a massively gory exit wound. Sure a .308 would work better, but only if you didn't want the head to be left on the animal.

Re: “Polyamorous success stories

Funny. Do you want a guy who is 100% honest? Do you want him to say, "Yes, your ass does look totally fat in those jeans." or, "Your cousin is totally hotter than you and I would have asked her out if we weren't already dating."? No, you don't. You want someone who is reasonably honest.

However, you will never meet him. Honesty and trust go hand-in-hand. If you cannot trust a man (or woman), he probably won't feel safe enough to talk about uncomfortable things.

Re: “Mayor Emanuel jacks up Misericordia's water bills

I don't get it. How, logically, does $15million in TIF funds have any effect on sewer funds? Yes, we should demand that the City release the TIF funds to public works or even make that TIF accounting transparent. But that in no way means that we should give 501c(3) organizations free water.

They are already tax-exempt. They should at least pay for the infrastructure they use. I don't see ComEd giving them free electricity or People's Gas giving them free gas just because they're a non-profit. Under what yardstick should we be giving free to people that arguably pay nothing back into the infrastructure? If the City were working under a budget surplus, then, yes, I'd support free water and sewer for non-profits, but I don't want a church to get free water in exchange for less police or firefighters.

I get, and respect, the desire to provide free services to the needy, but the practical economics of our situation means we need to find better ways to develop revenue, cut costs, and spend smartly.

Re: “Illinois Department of Agriculture: not playing Nice Cream

So, I fail to see the problem with getting properly licensed.

The State told her she was free to use fresh strawberries, but they might not pass the bacteria test and treated strawberries either looked terrible or had no taste. But she's still allowed to use them.

A pasteurizer isn't cheap, but she could legally do it on a stove, too. It's just more work.

A dairy license is required. So get one. If it's too expensive, then join up with all the other artisanal ice cream makers in Chicago, form a co-op or corporation, then name all the little guys as subsidiaries.

She's not being shut-down, she's being told to comply with public health laws. Remember, Chicago's food processing is the reason the US has safe-handling laws.

Re: “Ben Joravsky's Guide to the Aldermanic Runoffs

Great article, but it's really a guide to SOME of the races, and should be referred to as such in the headline. I was kinda hoping for insight to the 36th.

Re: “The Unreality Show

Wait, isn't this the same Meeks who took kids out of school to protest that rich people live in the suburbs and pay huge taxes to support their high-end schools? Meanwhile, CPS received less Federal money due to the fact that their first day headcount was reduced...

Emanuel may be The Lord of Darkness, but at least he takes full responsibility for it. Meeks is that used car salesman who keeps on telling you that Pontiac is a Cadillac....
