Re: “Giant

Regarding Dave Kehr's review; he fails to mention the cultural & racial themes this film addresses. What a remarkable statement on race, class, gender roles, family, progress, & more. Interestingly, Mr. Kehr' refers to Dean's character as " White trash" & in doing so demonstrates a lingering legacy of the oppressive Old South class system.
Social themes aside, Dean's performance is amazingly modern. Also, at various points in the film Rink is pitiful, the underdog, the good guy, the bad guy, the hero & the villain; shades of Gatsby. This film was ahead of its time.
Incidentally, Stevens got the Oscar for best director.
