John Loos's hour-plus show can be viewed on so many levels that press materials referencing Moby-Dick and Heart of Darkness don't feel overstated. Saturday Night Live is his white whale, and between jokes we see passion turn into obsession and obsession into mania and desperation. The show serves as his pseudo audition for comedy godfather Lorne Michaels, but also offers a clever, jarringly close-to-home parody of the Chicago "comedy-industrial complex." Loos is spot-on with his impressions of stereotypical performers (think schleppy bro and faux feminist overusing the word "abortion") and training centers, driving home his thesis that there are few rungs attainable on the comedy ladder for an openly gay comic. Other highlights include Loos’s costume, an homage to the ever-pantsless Elaine Stritch, and Seth Kannof as the musical narrator. —Marissa Oberlander
