A slick German video (2000, 93 min.) on the music and life of John Lee Hooker, the prolific and influential Delta bluesman who hit the big time in the 1960s after white fans anointed him “king of the boogie.” Director Joerg Bundschuh presents a chronology of key events from Hooker's career, new and vintage performances, and testimonials from a wide range of relatives and acolytes; among the many musicians pondering the old man's mystique are Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, Buddy Guy, Carlos Santana, and Peter Wolf of the J. Geils Band. Hooker himself has little to say about his broken marriage or his reputation as a lady-killer, but Bundschuh manages to piece together a portrait of a dedicated artist who overcame segregation and sleazy producers to become a wealthy and internationally renowned figure.
