Losing the War was probably the most insightful meditation on WWII in the last half century. It permanently colored my vision of the war in a way that casts permanent shadows on drivel like Burn's PBS documentary or Brokaw's dreadful pean. Its rightful place is up there with Toland, Lord and Churchill in sweep and insight. It was so masterfully subtle thatt wasn't until the penultimate installment I realized it was actually commemorating a significant anniversary. I kept my paper copy in the basement until I was sure that it was available in Reader online archives. That he was only in his late thirties when he wrote it is even more astounding. The world has lost a HUGE talent.
