Commissioned by W.B. Yeats for the Abbey Theatre, George Bernard Shaw's 1904 comedy about Anglo-Irish relations turned out to be too hot for Dublin. Always the apple-cart tipper, Shaw gores Irish as well as English sacred cows. Today, Shaw's relentless iconoclasm feels quite contemporary, but his love of characters adept at verbal wit and well-reasoned arguments may alienate audiences used to spectacle and nonstop action. This goes double for ShawChicago's readers-theater-style production, performed on a bare stage with a minimum of props. But those who love smart, subtle, literate theater will find that this fine production--directed by Belinda Bremner and starring an A-list of eloquent Equity actors--puts the emphasis just where it belongs: on Shaw's rich language, and the myriad of ideas it expresses. --Jack Helbig
