"The Future Sound of Detroit" may have been the slogan of +8, the pioneering techno label cofounded by Italian-born, Ontario-based John Acquaviva, but his DJ sets have never been quite that narrowly focused. Acquaviva tends less toward hard, dark minimalism and more toward free-ranging eclecticism than his partner Richie Hawtin, emphasizing dark, funky house, airier techno, and wild cards. Unlike most DJs with an identifiable sound, he's famous for being willing to play anything at any time. He's just as comfortable spinning classic disco, as he did a few years back in New York, when he wound up subbing for an indefinitely-stalled-at-the-border Hawtin, as he is with yesterday afternoon's dubplates. A set I caught a couple years ago was typical: pounding hard house a la Green Velvet gave way to smooth, techier stuff and vice versa, and in the middle of it all Acquaviva seamlessly slipped in Michael Jackson's "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'."
